I have been athletic, fit and in competitive sports most of my life. I was on Olympic Development Soccer teams from ages 12-17 and then played Soccer at the University of Washington. Unfortunately, I had a few ankle injuries in college that ended my college soccer career. During my senior year of college, I found out that I had a tumor in my intestine. The tumor connected to my stomach and had put pressure on my spine to where I could no longer walk. I was in and out of the hospital for a year. Leaving the hospital after multiple surgeries was a low point for me; I hadn’t worked in a year, I moved home with my parents, and I had lost about 40 pounds.
I was motivated after that year to put weight back on and make fitness a big part of my life. However, I was reluctant to start CrossFit. I heard people talk about it and from those discussions, I just didn’t think it was for me. I kept going to the regular gym and doing the typical workout for a month then take a month off. I could never get on a regular schedule. I got bored and with the boredom, I was getting more and more out of shape as I got older. My reality was, once I got out of competitive sports and after the surgeries, I didn’t have the same drive to hit the gym on a regular basis and my fitness and health suffered. What was my motivation to work out regularly and work out with the right intensity if I was no longer competing? On the rare occasions I did work out, all I would do were bicep curls….I couldn’t skip out on those! So the little working out I did, was for trying to look good in tight t-shirts and I know now, that’s not the way to build a healthy lifestyle.
I eventually came around and tried CrossFit. I came to CrossFit Interbay and since then CrossFit has been a huge part in changing not just how I look but also how I think and strive to be better in all areas of my life. The community and friends I found at CrossFit Interbay are more than anything I would have expected from a gym. I work out hard, eat healthy, play sports with members from the gym and majority of my social activities include the wonderful people I’ve gotten close with at CrossFit Interbay.
I’m still amazed at how my life has changed. I have a physical job that I love, I run my own construction company; I train at CrossFit Interbay 4-6 times a week; and I use my fitness to pursue my other passion: spending time on my boat in the summer wake surfing.
know you’re wondering…..I do look good in tight t-shirts and I’m happy
to flex my biceps for a mirror or picture any chance I get. :-)
