Workout of the Day (WOD)

Monday 7/9/12 Learn a new word called "Moderation"

The kids went to King Tut then demonstrated how the Egyptian pharaoh's trained......burpees and airsquats.....true story.

So how did you do eating over the past week with the 4th of July?  Why are the most delicious things in life likely the worst thing you can eat?

Usually when I eat out, I stick to meats and veggies, but every now and then, I indulge! I can’t help it.  I went to a BBQ on Saturday and ate some chips, bacon hot dogs and rum baked beans, mmmmmmmm.  I went out to dinner last week and indulged in a greasy burger with sweet potato fries with gravy on them.  What’s not to like about them? The fries were thin cut potatoes lightly battered before being cooked thoroughly, thus saturated through and through with deep fried cooking oil. The finished crispy fries are seasoned with a course ground salt before service. My mouth is watering just thinking about them!

Yes they are delicious, but they are definitely not the choice to make for a healthy lifestyle. The fries are what I call "devilishly delicious." A nice way of saying they are really good but really bad. A well cooked and seasoned steak is simply delicious, not devilishly delicious.

If you have an addiction to your devilishly delicious food, then you need to read no further. You just need to go cold turkey for a while and break the bad habit; sorry it’s the cold hard truth.  Like any bad habit you need to go cold turkey for a long time until you build a good habit.

For those of you who can control your inner desires for devilishly delicious foods, you do not need to totally avoid them! Devilishly delicious foods need to pleasure the palate in moderate doses. What are some simple ways to do this? Order good stuff with your bad stuff! Eat the good stuff first. When I put fries on my plate, I am eating the veggies and meat first. Eat only half or less of the devilishly delicious portion. You don’t want to eat the devilishly delicious food to get full, eat it as a taste or treat for yourself.  Also, if you’re eating out, the devilishly delicious food should not make it in the “to go box.”  Eat only a small portion of what they serve to you and leave the rest at the restaurant.  The fries are so wrong, even though they taste so right.

You don’t need to be a nutrition robot. I’ve often read articles written by fitness obsessed people who think of food as nothing more than fuel. Life is too short and food is too good. Yes, eat clean & healthy and make it a part of your lifestyle but when you want those devilishly delicious foods, learn moderation.
